But in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-anthropic-ipo-is-also-a-doomsday-primer\/\" class=\"text link\">IPO filing Monday<\/a>, Anthropic struck a humbler note, acknowledging its lack of experience in physical experimentation and the potential pitfalls of drug development. Wherever it\u2019s going, it seems, it will take some time to get there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Two years ago, Amodei <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/machines-of-loving-grace#1-biology-and-health\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/machines-of-loving-grace#1-biology-and-health&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/machines-of-loving-grace#1-biology-and-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> that he was \u201copen\u201d to the idea that AI systems could produce a thousand years of progress in biology in just five to 10 years. In August, he <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DarioAmodei\/status\/2088758819304443967?lang=en\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/DarioAmodei\/status\/2088758819304443967?lang=en&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DarioAmodei\/status\/2088758819304443967?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said on X<\/a> that \u201cAnthropic is ramping up its efforts very quickly in biology and medicine.\u201d In the same post, he predicted that AI will make it possible to cure most human diseases in the next five to 10 years and promised a \u201cdeluge of AI-accelerated drugs.\u201d The company also promoted <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/research\/claude-discovers-novel-enzyme-system\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/research\/claude-discovers-novel-enzyme-system&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/research\/claude-discovers-novel-enzyme-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the discovery<\/a> of a \u201cCrispr-like\u201d enzyme by Claude in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While the new IPO filing still touts AI\u2019s ability to \u201cprofoundly accelerate the rate of progress in biology and medicine\u201d and compress \u201cdecades of scientific progress into years,\u201d it\u2019s reserved about how it will turn the potential into the actual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company says that its teams \u201cneed first-hand experience doing scientific research and drug discovery\u201d and that its life sciences activities will require it \u201cto engage in activities outside our historical experience as a software and research organization.\u201d That includes handling potentially hazardous materials, operating laboratory equipment, and complying with a bevy of regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic also toned down its language about its enzyme discovery, saying it \u201c<em>might<\/em> have the <em>potential<\/em> to be developed into a novel biotechnology tool, <em>perhaps<\/em> for gene editing.\u201d (Italics added for emphasis.) Researchers previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-says-it-discovered-a-crispr-like-system-now-what\/\" class=\"text link\">told <em>WIRED<\/em><\/a> they were skeptical of the enzyme discovery\u2019s value and utility, and one scientist who had been studying these exact enzymes <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/27\/science\/anthropic-biology-enzyme-mestre.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/27\/science\/anthropic-biology-enzyme-mestre.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/27\/science\/anthropic-biology-enzyme-mestre.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">became suspicious<\/a> that Claude used his research. (The company said neither its model nor its molecular biology team would have had access to this material.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The IPO filing indicates that Anthropic no longer sees itself solely as an outside provider of AI tools to the biotech industry; it sees biotech discovery as a core part of its business model. And like all biotech companies, it faces the long timeline of drug development. Any AI-assisted discoveries still have to be researched in a test tube, then in animals, and eventually in people. Even if AI could help sort out which new drugs or targets will work in humans versus those likely to be duds, it will still take years of testing to prove their safety and efficacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic recognizes these challenges in its filing. \u201cAny drug candidates or other discoveries resulting from these efforts would face the lengthy, costly, and uncertain development and regulatory pathways characteristic of the life sciences industry, and may never generate revenue,\u201d the filing says. (For his part, Amodei made the case in his August X post for streamlining regulations for the coming wave of AI-generated drugs.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">US Security and Exchange Commission filings are generally more cautious than statements made by companies or their executives given the legal risks of overstating claims to would-be investors.
