{"id":9558,"date":"2026-10-29T00:56:28","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T00:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9558"},"modified":"2026-10-29T00:56:28","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T00:56:28","slug":"senators-demand-to-know-if-dr-oz-collaborated-with-election-denial-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9558","title":{"rendered":"Senators Demand to Know if Dr. Oz Collaborated With Election Denial Groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">With a week<\/span> to go before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/massive-groups-of-volunteers-are-ready-to-face-down-ice-at-the-polls\/\" class=\"text link\">midterms<\/a>, a group of Democratic senators are demanding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/dr-oz-centers-for-medicare-and-medicaid-services-tells-employees-to-eat-less\/\" class=\"text link\">Mehmet Oz<\/a>, the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), share communications his department may have had with far-right groups promoting a baseless conspiracy theory about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/republican-election-groups-are-now-targeting-nursing-homes\/\" class=\"text link\">left-wing groups stealing votes<\/a> from residents of nursing homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In July, Oz\u2019s agency <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qssam-26-04-nh-original-release-2026-07-20.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qssam-26-04-nh-original-release-2026-07-20.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qssam-26-04-nh-original-release-2026-07-20.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued a memo<\/a> rescinding <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qso-24-21-nh-original-release-date-2024-09-26.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qso-24-21-nh-original-release-date-2024-09-26.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/files\/document\/qso-24-21-nh-original-release-date-2024-09-26.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous guidance<\/a> on how staff at nursing homes could help residents to vote by assisting with mail-in voting or transporting residents to polling locations. The memo replaced that guidance with threats of prosecution if staff \u201cengage in inappropriate coercion or other violations of residents\u2019 rights.\u201d Referring to this memo, election denial groups last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/republican-election-groups-are-now-targeting-nursing-homes\/\" class=\"text link\">began to boost claims<\/a> that voter fraud was happening inside care facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That campaign was spearheaded by the Election Integrity Network, a group led by Cleta Mitchell, a former adviser to president Donald Trump. \u201cThese left-wing groups go into the nursing homes, and they go into the group homes, and they basically steal the votes of these most vulnerable,\u201d Mitchell said in a recent appearance on <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bannons_WarRoom\/status\/2095547139384295733\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/Bannons_WarRoom\/status\/2095547139384295733&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bannons_WarRoom\/status\/2095547139384295733\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Bannon\u2019s <em>War Room<\/em> show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/republican-election-groups-are-now-targeting-nursing-homes\/\" class=\"text link\">WIRED\u2019s reporting<\/a> on the nursing home conspiracy theories, a group of senators that includes Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Alex Padilla, Mazie Hirono, Ron Wyden, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jeff Merkley, and Cory Booker wrote in a letter to CMS to \u201durgently request that CMS rescind its July 2026 memorandum and reinstate its 2020 and 2024 nursing home voting guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is as low as it gets,\u201d Warren tells WIRED. \u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s unfounded allegations of election fraud are inspiring election denial groups to harass nursing home residents and staff. With less than a week until Election Day, every lawmaker in America should be standing up for fair elections and pushing back on this attack on seniors\u2019 voting rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A CMS spokesperson did not respond to questions about the agency\u2019s communications with election denial groups but instead referred WIRED to the July 2026 memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the letter, Warren and her colleagues specifically ask Oz about communications between CMS and Mitchell, the Election Integrity Network, and Project Civica, a New York\u2013based election-denial group.
