{"id":9571,"date":"2026-10-29T04:45:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T04:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9571"},"modified":"2026-10-29T04:45:29","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T04:45:29","slug":"bluesky-blocks-links-to-major-leak-of-dhs-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9571","title":{"rendered":"Bluesky Is Blocking Links to a Major Leak of DHS Employee Records"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bluesky is blocking users from opening links to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/massive-leak-exposes-41000-homeland-security-workers-including-undercover-ice-agents\/\" class=\"text link\">newly leaked archive<\/a> of records on more than 41,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ice-is-running-one-of-the-largest-anti-left-surveillance-operations-in-us-history\/\" class=\"text link\">Department of Homeland Security<\/a> employees and contractors, and labels the pages \u201cmalicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The files include people\u2019s email addresses and phone numbers, \u201cshared without their authorization,\u201d Bluesky tells WIRED, in violation of its <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">community guidelines<\/a>. The company says it chose to block the links, rather than remove individual posts, \u201cto avoid limiting public discussion or restricting broader access to reporting and commentary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The DHS records, published Wednesday by the transparency nonprofit Distributed Denial of Secrets, list employees&#8217; and contractors\u2019 names, contact information, and membership in internal groups, tied in some cases to surveillance and undercover operations. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/massive-leak-exposes-41000-homeland-security-workers-including-undercover-ice-agents\/\" class=\"text link\">WIRED investigation found<\/a> that the files lay out in detail how DHS is organized, from senior leadership to individual immigration agents, and in some cases appear to show who has access to certain technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Users who try to open the archive through Bluesky\u2019s website or app land on a page labeled &#8220;Blocked Link,&#8221; which says the URL has been identified as \u201cmalicious\u201d and blocked for their safety. Bluesky did not respond to questions about whether the block was imposed automatically or whether any government agency had asked the company to restrict access to the data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The DDoSecrets homepage loads normally from Bluesky. At least one third-party app, Klearsky, opens links to the DHS archive with no warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bluesky promotes a decentralized approach to content moderation that lets users pick independent services that label or filter posts. Its current <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.social\/about\/support\/community-guidelines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">community guidelines<\/a> bar sharing \u201chome addresses, personal contact info, financial or medical data, or identification documents.\u201d (A preview of the DHS leak analyzed by WIRED apparently contained work-related contact information one expert described as details that would be printed \u201con a business card.\u201d) The same guidelines explicitly protect \u201cfactual reporting\u201d on matters of public interest that are \u201crelated to government transparency and public officials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bluesky started in 2019 as a Twitter research project, later became independent, and opened to the public in February 2024. By August of this year, it counted 45 million registered accounts, and an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/08\/11\/blueskys-active-user-base-is-shrinking-as-its-focus-expands-beyond-the-app\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/08\/11\/blueskys-active-user-base-is-shrinking-as-its-focus-expands-beyond-the-app\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/08\/11\/blueskys-active-user-base-is-shrinking-as-its-focus-expands-beyond-the-app\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated 10.4 million people<\/a> used its mobile app in June. Toni Schneider, the founding CEO of Automattic, has run the company since cofounder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/bluesky-ceo-jay-graber-is-stepping-down\/\" class=\"text link\">Jay Graber stepped down in March<\/a>. Twitter suspended DDoSecrets\u2019 account in 2020, prior to the Elon Musk acquisition and X rebrand, and blocked links to its website after the group published BlueLeaks, a 269-gigabyte trove of internal records from hundreds of police agencies and fusion centers. Best says tech platforms often give in to government pressure but insists they cannot prevent the information from spreading. \u201cThey can&#8217;t stop the signal,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A group calling itself the Department of Peace gave the archive, dubbed \u201cIcepick,\u201d to DDoSecrets and journalist maia arson crimew. crimew also built a website for searching the records, and Bluesky blocks that site in its website and app as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At least one of Bluesky\u2019s competitors has taken a different tack.
