Technically, the vehicle used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-tesla-made-its-new-230-mph-car-fly\/\" class=\"text link\">compressed air to \u201cthrust\u201d itself<\/a>\u2014the \u201cflying\u201d lasted mere seconds, and the system <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.hagerty.com\/media\/videos\/the-flying-tesla-roadster-explained-by-the-man-who-engineered-it\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hagerty.com\/media\/videos\/the-flying-tesla-roadster-explained-by-the-man-who-engineered-it\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hagerty.com\/media\/videos\/the-flying-tesla-roadster-explained-by-the-man-who-engineered-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">takes six to seven hours to refill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Never mind, though\u2014some buyers were eager to unsheath their credit cards to reserve one of the cars. \u201cI was freaking out,\u201d says Alex Lawrence, the owner of used-electric-vehicle dealership EVAuto, who already had one reservation for a second-gen Roadster and watched the demonstration live online. \u201cI placed another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s not a decision most would make lightly. Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-roadster-2-is-late-and-entering-a-different-ev-world\/\" class=\"text link\">took years<\/a> to get the sports car even close to production. The automaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-new-roadster\/\" class=\"text link\">first introduced the vehicle<\/a>, a successor to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2010\/03\/pr-tesla-sport\/\" class=\"text link\">first car ever<\/a>, as a surprise at a 2017 event, and immediately began taking $50,000 reservations. At the time, the plan was to deliver the cars in 2020; Musk and company now say the vehicle will enter production in 2028, with delivery dates unclear. (If reservation holders had put that money into Tesla stock, they would be up nearly $1 million today.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The Roadster is also expensive to reserve\u2014and will likely get pricier to buy. The vehicle\u2019s base model, which doesn\u2019t include acceleration thrusters or the flight system, still costs $50,000 to reserve. The second-tier Thrust variant, which comes with the thrusters, requires a $250,000 deposit. The actual flying car, called Rocket, is listed as \u201cinvite-only,\u201d and even Musk has acknowledged the vehicle won\u2019t be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-flying-car-faa\/\" class=\"text link\">street legal<\/a>. Meanwhile, the automaker\u2019s reservation terms note that purchase prices are \u201conly an estimate\u201d\u2014and those estimates don\u2019t even exist yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Whatever! \u201cI\u2019m going to do everything in my power to get the flying one,\u201d Lawrence says. When he sees the Roadster, after all, he sees money signs. His EV dealership has a large and growing social media following, and the business, not the man, technically put down the money for the Roadster reservations. \u201cWe\u2019re going to put it on the track and use it for marketing content,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Utah-based tech founder Travis Cook upped his nearly 10-year-old reservation for the base Roadster variant to the Thrust because he actually wants to live with the thing. He calls himself a \u201ccar aficionado\u201d and has a dealer\u2019s license so he can buy and sell fun cars.
