{"id":9600,"date":"2026-10-29T14:16:43","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T14:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9600"},"modified":"2026-10-29T14:16:43","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T14:16:43","slug":"mistral-says-le-chonk-surpasses-chinese-models-cybersecurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9600","title":{"rendered":"Mistral Says Its AI Model \u2018Le Chonk\u2019 Has Leapfrogged China in the Open-Weight Race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A few weeks<\/span> ago, French company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mistral-is-in-the-right-place-at-the-right-time\/\" class=\"text link\">Mistral<\/a> released an early version of its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">artificial intelligence<\/a> model, nicknamed Le Chonk. At the time, the company said it was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mistral-new-model-le-chonk-open-source-china-us-frontier\/\" class=\"text link\">most advanced open-weight offering outside of China.<\/a> After further refinement, Mistral now says Le Chonk is the \u201cworld\u2019s best\u201d open-weight model for automated coding and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The advances, Mistral says, were made possible by feeding the model increasingly difficult cybersecurity and coding problems, which allowed the trillion-parameter Le Chonk to match or surpass models from leading Chinese labs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/deepseek\/\" class=\"text link\">DeepSeek<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/zai-open-weight-ai-models-release-cybersecurity-hacking\/\" class=\"text link\">Z.ai<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s a pivotal moment in the global AI leadership race,\u201d Pierre Stock, VP of science at Mistral, told reporters during a press briefing. \u201cIt offers frontier capabilities for enterprises and governments to defend against an increasing threat level in cyber.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The finalized version of Le Chonk is now freely available for anybody to access. After a flurry of AI-related cybersecurity incidents, Mistral claims that it\u2019s important for the West to have its own advanced open-weight models. \u201cYou have no guarantee that [Chinese models] won\u2019t behave maliciously. They can be threat vectors,\u201d Stock said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The most high-profile episode occurred when one of OpenAI\u2019s models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-sued-over-the-hugging-face-hack\/\" class=\"text link\">broke loose from a testing sandbox<\/a> and hacked into multiple companies over the summer. It sparked panic over the idea that AI could escape human oversight and be abused by threat actors to launch sophisticated cyberattacks. (One of the affected companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hugging-face-new-ai-biology-model-chat-with-dna\/\" class=\"text link\">Hugging Face<\/a>, used an open-weight model from China to assess and defend against the attack.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Since then, AI has unearthed security vulnerabilities in ubiquitous software, too. In October, a raft of websites were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cmly0lg3w5x2o\" class=\"text link\">taken offline<\/a> after an AI tool <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-is-not-a-drill-2-php-vulnerabilities-are-setting-the-internet-on-fire\/\" class=\"text link\">discovered serious flaws<\/a> in a foundational piece of web technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mistral pitches its open-weight models, like Le Chonk, as part of the solution. If AI is destined to become a central feature of both cyber offense and defense, the argument goes, businesses and governments will need to be equipped with models that are freely available and cannot be switched off remotely, unlike proprietary models from the likes of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAI is going to be like electricity. You don\u2019t want to live in a world in which your neighbor can cut off electricity from one day to another,\u201d Stock said. \u201cOnce you open source the weights, they\u2019re all over the internet. It\u2019s impossible to cut off access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The trade-off, however, is that freely available models can also be downloaded and customized by threat actors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s clearly a dual-use technology,\u201d Rafe Pilling, senior director of threat intelligence at security company Sophos, tells WIRED. \u201cAnything that\u2019s available to download and circulate unfettered has the ability to be abused as well as used for productive purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to Pilling, though it\u2019s possible a Chinese model with internet access could siphon away data, all advanced models are capable of going rogue without careful supervision\u2014no matter their country of origin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe technical realities and the narrative\u2014which often has a nationalistic leaning\u2014are two different things,\u201d he says.\u201cIt\u2019s about having the right monitoring and controls in place to be confident that, even if the model was trying to be deceptive or nefarious, you might have some way of detecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mistral-says-le-chonk-surpasses-chinese-models-cybersecurity\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, French company Mistral released an early version of its new artificial intelligence model, nicknamed Le Chonk.
