During Intel\u2019s latest earnings call<\/a>, CEO Lip-Bu Tan said that demand for its budget-focused Wildcat Lake chips<\/a> \u201cis outstripping supply.\u201d According to CFO David Zinsner, the chips are now sold out. Zinsner said Intel has \u201cseen significant growth in Wildcat Lake. It\u2019s coming exactly at the right time because it\u2019s cost-optimized and we\u2019re seeing a lot of focus in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As shortages of RAM<\/a> and other components have driven up PC prices over recent months, Intel\u2019s Wildcat Lake chips have been appearing in new lower-cost Windows laptops on par with the MacBook Neo, like the new Dell XPS 13<\/a> or the HP Omnibook 5 14<\/a>. Wildcat Lake laptops like these have budget-friendly starting prices, but often with just 8GB of RAM, which Windows laptops can struggle to get by<\/a> on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Intel doesn\u2019t expect the memory shortage to improve any time soon. Zinsner responded to a question about memory supply, saying, \u201cMake no mistake, we are not optimistic about next year in terms of memory.\u201d He added, \u201cwe\u2019ll, you know, have to see in \u201828 whether things improve, but our expectation is that it does not improve in \u201827.\u201d That\u2019s more optimistic than SK Hynix\u2019s prediction<\/a> that the RAM shortage will drag on through 2030.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tan also acknowledged the PC demand slowdown<\/a>, saying, \u201cThe industry continues to navigate one of the most significant supply shortages in the [sic] history, driven by the unprecedented demand for super intelligence,\u201d referring to AI<\/a>. Zinsner went on to respond to a question during the earnings call, saying, \u201cWe do think the PC is going to go through a renaissance despite this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
