{"id":9655,"date":"2026-10-30T11:50:29","date_gmt":"2026-10-30T11:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9655"},"modified":"2026-10-30T11:50:29","modified_gmt":"2026-10-30T11:50:29","slug":"the-dollar63-billion-binance-hack-was-pulled-off-in-just-20-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=9655","title":{"rendered":"The $6.3 Billion Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Within North Korea\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/north-korean-hacker-group-apt37\/\" class=\"text link\">sprawling<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ai-tools-are-helping-mediocre-north-korean-hackers-steal-millions\/\" class=\"text link\">hacking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/north-korea-hackers-indictment-cryptocurrency-sony-swift\/\" class=\"text link\">operations<\/a>\u2014often designed to earn money for the highly sanctioned and repressive regime\u2014TraderTraitor has stood out in recent years for its sophistication and targeting of crypto and decentralized finance companies. Last year, the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/investigate\/cyber\/alerts\/2025\/north-korea-responsible-for-1-5-billion-bybit-hack\" class=\"text link\">named<\/a> TraderTraitor as being responsible for the $1.5 billion hack against crypto exchange Bybit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Binance did not answer WIRED\u2019s questions about whether it believes North Korean hackers are behind the colossal heist, pointing towards a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/binance\/status\/2116089661408108712\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/binance\/status\/2116089661408108712&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/binance\/status\/2116089661408108712\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> saying it will cover all losses from the hack and is working with law enforcement officials to identify who is responsible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOur initial investigation suggested that the security incident may have involved a compromised laptop, however, our subsequent investigation has uncovered additional points of breach,\u201d the company says in a statement. \u201cThis was a complex attack, and we are doing all we can in coordination with law enforcement to resolve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThese folks in particular are somewhat artists in terms of getting into these distributed finance organizations,\u201d Rafe Pilling, a senior director of threat intelligence at security company Sophos, tells WIRED. \u201cTraderTraitor seems to focus on these larger operations. In the past, they\u2019ve developed their own fake applications and tried to use those to get inside organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">TRM and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/binance-exploit-latest-findings-and-response\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/binance-exploit-latest-findings-and-response\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/binance-exploit-latest-findings-and-response\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chainalysis<\/a> have initially linked the attack to TraderTraitor and say the determinations are based on their analysis of both on-chain and off-chain activity. \u201c\u200b\u200bThe strongest evidence emerged when Chainalysis investigators observed, in real time, funds stolen from Binance commingling with funds stolen in last month\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.trmlabs.com\/resources\/blog\/bitget-loses-usd-3516-million-in-hot-wallet-breach-in-likely-north-korea-attack\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.trmlabs.com\/resources\/blog\/bitget-loses-usd-3516-million-in-hot-wallet-breach-in-likely-north-korea-attack&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trmlabs.com\/resources\/blog\/bitget-loses-usd-3516-million-in-hot-wallet-breach-in-likely-north-korea-attack\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bitget exploit<\/a>, which had been attributed to North Korean actors,\u201d a research blog from Chainalysis says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cBinance says the attack began with a compromised engineer\u2019s laptop. Targeting crypto company staff is a TraderTraitor hallmark,\u201d Elliptic\u2019s Robinson says. \u201cThe attacker funded their wallet through Tornado Cash and rehearsed the attack in advance, as in Bybit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While around $3 billion of cryptocurrency was initially frozen in the aftermath of the attack, it is likely those behind it could still potentially take away huge sums as not all of the stolen crypto can be frozen. Research from Chainalysis says the company is seeing money \u201claundering patterns we have not seen before\u201d and that thousands of transactions being quickly processed indicates that they are using \u201cautomation to obscure the trail of funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Elliptic\u2019s Robinson says that around $2.8 billion, or around 44 percent of the total amount stolen, has been frozen by crypto companies and exchanges so far, with almost all of this being stablecoins. \u201cThe remaining $3.3 billion is mostly Bitcoin, Ether, and XRP, which no one can freeze,\u201d Robinson says. \u201cIt can only be stopped when it reaches an exchange or other service.
