And in recent weeks, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-just-dumped-another-dollar76-million-into-the-midterms\/\" class=\"text link\">midterm elections<\/a> approach and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musks-america-pac-is-spending-big-on-the-midterms-were-tracking-it-daily\/\" class=\"text link\">Musk\u2019s financial support<\/a> of the Texas GOP has become virtually limitless, that relationship has gone under the microscope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While polls suggest that a number of races in deep-red Texas are looking dizzyingly close, Federal Election Commission filings show that Musk has given at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-just-dumped-another-dollar76-million-into-the-midterms\/\" class=\"text link\">$158 million<\/a> to super PACs supporting Texas attorney general Ken Paxton\u2019s bid for Senate, and last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uncanny-valley-podcast-inside-elon-musks-midterm-spending-spree\/\" class=\"text link\">Musk<\/a> explicitly endorsed him in a post on X. \u201cThe fate of Texas and America is at stake,\u201d Musk wrote. \u201cVote for @KenPaxtonTX today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Newly released state campaign filings also show that Musk also <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101072179.PDF\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101072179.PDF&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101072179.PDF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">donated $5,000,000<\/a> to Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s bid for reelection, making him his single largest donor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Abbott\u2019s relationship with Musk has been the subject of public interest for years. State representative Gina Hinojosa, who is running against Abbott, recently sued to view, in full, 1,400 pages of the governor\u2019s correspondences with Musk. Abbott has been trying to block their release for some time; his office has described the communications as too \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/14\/texas-greg-abbott-elon-musk-emails-spacex-telsa-foia\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/14\/texas-greg-abbott-elon-musk-emails-spacex-telsa-foia\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/14\/texas-greg-abbott-elon-musk-emails-spacex-telsa-foia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intimate and embarrassing<\/a>\u201d to be made public. This week, a judge ruled that Abbott had illegally \u201cobstructed and continues to obstruct\u201d Hinojosa\u2019s right to inspect the documents in her capacity as a state lawmaker and ordered their release to her. Abbott has since appealed; a hearing is scheduled for November 2, one day before the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">State representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/james-talarico-texas-democrats-gerrymandering\/\" class=\"text link\">James Talarico, who is running against Paxton<\/a> for Senate, has campaigned on his opponents\u2019 checkered past. As attorney general, Paxton has been indicted on felony securities fraud charges (which he settled without a plea), was accused by whistleblowers of using his office to benefit the financial interests of a political donor, and was impeached (though later acquitted).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">And <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/10\/26\/el-paso-texas-election-2026-james-talarico-senate-candidate-talks-elon-musk-mega-donors\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/10\/26\/el-paso-texas-election-2026-james-talarico-senate-candidate-talks-elon-musk-mega-donors\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/10\/26\/el-paso-texas-election-2026-james-talarico-senate-candidate-talks-elon-musk-mega-donors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at a campaign event<\/a> on Monday in El Paso, Talarico raised questions about Paxton and Musk\u2019s relationship. \u201cKen Paxton has the ultimate megadonor,\u201d Talarico said. \u201cElon Musk is trying to buy this Senate seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But Musk\u2019s business dealings in Texas politics didn\u2019t start with the midterms. For years, he has enjoyed lucrative state contacts, tax breaks, and allyship from Texas leaders. In 2021, Musk moved Tesla\u2019s corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, and SpaceX\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-x-spacex-texas-move\/\" class=\"text link\">headquarters<\/a> from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Musk\u2019s initial relocation to Texas coincided with a shift in operations inside the Texas Attorney General\u2019s office.
