He almost immediately starts explaining \u201cthe math\u201d behind his passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-new-study-about-color-tries-to-decode-the-brains-pantone\/\" class=\"text link\">color science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But I didn\u2019t call to chat about psychophysics or color theory. I called to talk to Yedlin about his <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/chromagraph-camera\/id6803329435\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/chromagraph-camera\/id6803329435&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/chromagraph-camera\/id6803329435\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chromagraph Camera app<\/a>, newly released, virally popular, and available only on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/iphone\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yedlin is a longtime collaborator with director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chris-evans-rian-johnson-knives-out-wired25\/\" class=\"text link\">Rian Johnson<\/a>, shooting his films like <em>Knives Out<\/em> and <em>Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/em>. The duo teamed up again for this launch. \u201cI write all of my own image processing that we use on the movies,\u201d he says. The Chromagraph Camera app brings a taste of Yedlin\u2019s special sauce to your smartphone camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Instead of the iPhone\u2019s built-in image processing, this app shoots RAW image data and processes it with a similar formula to what he uses in film production. After Johnson promoted Chromagraph Camera on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/category\/business\/social-media\/\" class=\"text link\">social media<\/a> in late October, it quickly became the top paid download in the iOS store. The app costs a one-time fee of $13 and only shoots still photos. (There\u2019s no video support yet.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I am far from the resident photography nerd on WIRED\u2019s gear team. (That award goes, in part, to my wonderful editor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/apple-iphone-18-pro-and-iphone-18-pro-max\/\" class=\"text link\">Julian<\/a>.) I\u2019m often just whipping out my iPhone and snapping a picture with the default settings. Even so, I really enjoyed capturing some of San Francisco\u2019s fall vibes using the Chromagraph Camera. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/apple\/\" class=\"text link\">Apple<\/a> gives iPhone owners plenty of built-in tools for adjusting the color on your own images, I loved this app\u2019s ability to capture highly stylized shots without me needing to fiddle with anything at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When you open the app, what you see in the viewfinder before snapping the shot is not what the Chromagraph Camera will spit out. The photo is essentially \u201cdeveloped\u201d in the app after you capture the image. This is because the app needs a moment to run its unique processing for the specific tone, color, and grain effects. You can also alter how an image looks in the app after it\u2019s processed, if you want to tweak the overall exposure or texture of an image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Yedlin is adamant that he\u2019s not attempting to replace your iPhone camera app or release a professional tool for editing everything. It\u2019s all about that color, man. \u201cIt&#8217;s just this curated app that takes the pictures the way we like,\u201d he says. Yedlin and Johnson teamed up with programmer Eric Cameron to build the app centered around their color tastes, experimenting with it for a couple of months before launch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Even after all of this custom image processing, Yedlin still sees the iPhone as a fundamentally limited device. \u201cThis idea that you can actually have the control that a professional camera would have is not really true anyhow,\u201d he says. Software can only do so much to change how hardware works, especially when developing an app within Apple\u2019s parameters that limit how far the software can push the phone\u2019s hardware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As advances in computational photography and generative AI have renewed discussions about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-camera-chief-thinks-ai-can-give-you-superpowers\/\" class=\"text link\">what a smartphone photo even is<\/a> anymore, Yedlin\u2019s approach isn&#8217;t an attempt to find a sense of neutrality. He doesn\u2019t see <em>any<\/em> image as a literal rendering of what exists. It\u2019s always an interpretation, whether that&#8217;s a stylized, artful depiction or a more stagnant shot. He says that the look of the Chromagraph Camera app is consciously \u201copinionated\u201d and specific.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou can describe how the different rendering looks in words, but you just have to look at it,\u201d he says.
