However, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kvng_chi\/status\/2117300489515868273\">some images<\/a> of the two men <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/i\/trending\/2117386539840012574\">circulating around X<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@mjg5x5\/post\/DfSEg4BEYf-?xmt=AQG0Z0SHWX_7CdbsWnT9-8DsZCvTky83tg4v2we48vgpNa-58Dzz_mwjXl3wDiWueAH3t7qJ&amp;slof=1\">Threads<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jamellebouie.net\/post\/3mzgcqghxbk2s\">Bluesky<\/a> in which they both have substantially more hair than their usual shaved look, which in Bezos\u2019 case appears to be <em>very<\/em> freshly transplanted. It\u2019s all just photo editing fakery, AI or otherwise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">It\u2019s unclear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@9six7\/post\/DfQyiH8EcmO\/looks-very-natural-said-everyone-on-his-payroll\/\">how viral<\/a> these <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/semtinmuhabiri\/status\/2117226307776127241\">posts are<\/a>, but they\u2019re prevalent enough that a few members of the <em>Verge<\/em> team have encountered them in their social media feeds. Some people who shared them claimed (or were seemingly fooled into believing) that Bezos and Statham had undergone hair transplant surgery. Generative AI tools have made this kind of photo manipulation or outright creation more accessible and convincing, and because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/934521\/google-synthid-c2pa-content-credentials-ai-labelling-efforts\">AI labeling solutions<\/a> on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/podcast\/874038\/ai-deepfakes-war-on-reality-c2pa-labels\">broadly suck<\/a> at flagging this fakery, it\u2019s easy to be misled unless you\u2019re wary of <em>everything<\/em> you see online. In a world where social media shitposters can turn engagement into a revenue stream, they\u2019re not going to stop churning out attention-grabbing fabricated nonsense anytime soon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">We don\u2019t know if AI tools were used to make the follicled Bezos and Statham edits \u2014 none of the images I tested flagged for Content Credentials or SynthID markers. We also can\u2019t fully establish when they were first posted or who made them, but they <em>are<\/em> definitely fake, and it only took me a couple of minutes to confirm it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In both cases, I ran the photos through Google\u2019s reverse image search tool. For the Bezos debunk, I found photographs of him in a similar background environment and wearing the exact same outfit (with, yes, no hair) that included a watermarked image credit at the bottom left. Searching for the credit then led me to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/lifestyle\/article-12877889\/lauren-sanchez-washboard-abs-jeff-bezos-st-barts.html\">original photographs<\/a> in their unaltered state, which were taken in 2023. Finding the original tressless images of Statham was even easier \u2014 the reverse image search immediately surfaced watermarked versions of the originals, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/tvshowbiz\/article-1380284\/Jason-Statham-plants-impromptu-smacker-Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley.html?utm_source=Pinterest&amp;utm_medium=organic\">snapped by a paparazzo in 2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">There\u2019s other evidence too if you know what to look for. The main flag is that it\u2019s probably impossible for Bezos and Statham to be realistic candidates for hair replacement surgery anyway; it requires you to have enough \u201cdonor\u201d hair to sacrifice from the back and sides of your head to then replant closer to your desired hairline. You can <em>technically<\/em> take it from other places (or even other people), but doing so is incredibly rare due to undesirable results and rejection concerns. Transplant patients also typically experience some pretty dramatic facial swelling for the first week or so, which Bezos shows no signs of. Wigs, toupees, and other hair systems can also be used as nonpermanent hair restoration solutions, but as someone who used to make and install them professionally, it would be an <em>astounding<\/em> whoopsie for someone as rich and connected as Bezos to go this route and still end up <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SlopeOfHope\/status\/2117362082685596120\">looking like a Chia Pet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">This isn\u2019t the first time photo-manipulated fakery has fooled people across social media, and with ongoing generative AI advancements, it probably won\u2019t be the last. Previous incidents gave us the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/3\/27\/23657927\/ai-pope-image-fake-midjourney-computer-generated-aesthetic\">viral swagged-out pope<\/a>, and recent trends have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/creeps-ai-undress-celebrities\">paparazzi photographs of celebrities<\/a> like Callum Turner, Harry Styles, and Noah Schnapp being manipulated to remove their shirts.
