In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown, who has aired ads for months calling his opponent \u201cthe face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-democrats-can-learn-new-york-data-center-moratorium\/\" class=\"text link\">data centers<\/a> in Ohio,\u201d cruised to victory to flip a Senate seat. Democrat Chris Pappas, who when seated will be the nation\u2019s first openly gay male senator, mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tE4U9r5DcI4\" class=\"text link\">his opposition to data centers<\/a> in his victory speech and drew massive boos from his crowd in New Hampshire\u2014even though the state has no large-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-the-us-anti-data-center-movement-can-learn-from-everywhere-else\/\" class=\"text link\">data centers<\/a> under construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Elsewhere, two separate Republicans named Derek and Derrick, whose Democratic opponents labeled them \u201cData Center Derek\u201d and \u201cDC Derrick,\u201d suffered losses in House races in Ohio and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As part of last night\u2019s shocking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/democrats-sweep-republicans-in-nearly-every-race-that-matters\/\" class=\"text link\">blue tsunami<\/a>, voters selected candidates with tough policies on data centers at all levels of government, in a clear rebuke to the industry\u2019s buildout in states across the country. Almost a quarter of all voters <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-elections\/exit-polls\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-elections\/exit-polls&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-elections\/exit-polls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told NBC News<\/a> that data centers were \u201ccrucial\u201d to their vote, while nearly two-thirds said it was either a major or minor factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe revolt against data centers was one of the top issues of the 2026 election, and in a few years we will look back on it as just the early tremor of a much bigger AI earthquake upending American politics,\u201d Greg Casar, the Texas Democratic congressman, said in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenBrodyDC\/status\/2117821832317534519\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/BenBrodyDC\/status\/2117821832317534519&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BenBrodyDC\/status\/2117821832317534519\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cData centers and AI as a technology are fundamentally linked in many voters&#8217; minds,\u201d says Alexander McCoy, a Democratic strategist working on AI. \u201cSo you can address all of the different concerns with data centers with regards to their energy or their noise, or their pollution, and there would still be significant concerns about what these projects are enabling and the effect is having on opportunities, prices, jobs, society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Perhaps some of the biggest shocks for the industry came in the governor\u2019s mansions. In stunning upsets, voters elected Democrats Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, while putting Cindy Holscher on the cusp of a potential win in Kansas. All of these candidates campaigned not just for increased regulations on the industry, but for data center moratoriums. A pause on data centers in Texas and Georgia especially, two of the biggest hubs for development in the country, could have serious implications for the hundreds of projects planned for each of those states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI think we will see the end to favorable tax breaks, and it\u2019s clear that people like Greg Abbott were harmed by their history of giving those financial incentives to AI companies and data center developers,\u201d says McCoy. \u201cI think we&#8217;ll likely see the appointment of regulators in various administrative bureaucratic bodies that pose more scrutiny on these projects and an increase in the enforcement of environmental protection regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-results-are-in-voters-hate-data-centers\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a bad night for data centers.
