\u201cIt\u2019s a very chronically online administration,\u201d he said. \u201cWith how short people\u2019s attention spans are, you have to make [things] interesting.\u201d Not all of the White House\u2019s efforts have been received smoothly on the right: Pearson believes the administration\u2019s decision to distribute portions of the Epstein files to 15 right-wing creators last year was \u201ca misstep.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Abughazaleh, a former Media Matters reporter, the administration\u2019s embrace of the internet signals something far more nefarious. Abughazaleh brought up the Department of Education\u2019s recent use of the \u201cMalfoid\u201d meme<\/a>\u2014a gender-bent Harry Potter fascist figurehead\u2014which, she said, was being promoted for a too-online audience of \u201cincels.\u201d And the White House\u2019s embrace of \u201cAI slop and brutality,\u201d seen in ads about ICE actions, was turning \u201ccruelty into content\u201d rather than informing people, she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re trying to ruin your attention span,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Abughazaleh and Pearson are pretty far apart on the political spectrum. The WIRED forum included some testy exchanges, including whether or not ICE facilities can be called \u201cconcentration camps\u201d\u2014a term Abughazaleh, who was arrested for protesting outside an ICE facility last year, used consistently (the charges were dropped after allegations of misconduct by prosecutors before a grand jury)\u2014and whether or not Elon Musk<\/a> had turned X into a \u201cbastion of free speech,\u201d according to Pearson.<\/p>\n

But both agreed that reliance on algorithms is increasingly making echo chambers with young Americans of both parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlgorithms show us what you want to see,\u201d Pearson said, mentioning that his friends on the left will sometimes send him articles on political topics he simply hasn\u2019t seen before. \u201cThe deeper question is, is that good for society or for democracy?\u201d<\/p>\n

On this, Abughazaleh agrees. \u201cWe have no shared reality,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
