But counterparts from three districts voiced similar frustration and pointed to work-arounds they were employing or considering to block <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/googles-ai-overviews-can-scam-you-heres-how-to-stay-safe\/\" class=\"text link\">AI Overviews<\/a> in lieu of an official \u201coff\u201d switch. Their expertise is about to be in demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Google <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/education\/ai-learning-era-updates-2026\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/education\/ai-learning-era-updates-2026\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/education\/ai-learning-era-updates-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on Tuesday that it is declining to provide schools an option to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-ai-overviews-how-to-use-how-to-turn-off\/\" class=\"text link\">disable AI Overviews<\/a>. Instead, starting next year, schools will have to block access to search altogether to get rid of the feature. The decision has stunned educators, parents, and technology researchers across the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe were flabbergasted,\u201d says Dominique Johnson, part of an Oregon community group called Lake Oswego Parents for Responsible Technology. \u201cThis move makes things even more difficult for school districts that have determined AI is harmful to foundational learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Google didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment. But in a public response to the controversy shared on X, the company <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/newsfromgoogle\/status\/2117714815477059722?s=46\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/newsfromgoogle\/status\/2117714815477059722?s=46&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/newsfromgoogle\/status\/2117714815477059722?s=46\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contended<\/a> that schools will now have \u201cmore choice, not less\u201d because search, its Gemini chatbot, and Gemini Notebook tool will be off by default starting next year. Administrators can enable one, two, or all three services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The issue for schools and parents, though, is that Google considers AI Overviews and a companion feature called AI Mode inseparable from the traditional search experience. Respectively launched in 2023 and 2025, they bring the functionality of AI chatbots, such as Gemini or ChatGPT, directly into search results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cKids are already using these search-bar summaries to skip real effort, pulling instant math answers and letting AI write their essays,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cTo make matters worse, these AI snapshots frequently make mistakes and output false facts, which younger students take as absolute truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The AI-generated responses are tempting to read and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-ai-overviews-says-its-still-2024\/\" class=\"text link\">often good enough to trust<\/a>, triggering headaches beyond classrooms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wikipedia-workers-vote-on-whether-to-unionize\/\" class=\"text link\">Wikipedia<\/a>, news websites, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chegg-embraced-ai-chatgpt-ate-its-lunch-anyway\/\" class=\"text link\">education tools<\/a> have lost human visitors as people rely on overviews.
