Abuja, Nigeria – June 10, 2024

Martin Otse, better known by his online persona VeryDarkMan, was released from police custody on Monday after a federal high court in Abuja granted him bail. Otse faces cyberstalking charges stemming from allegedly offensive videos posted on his Instagram account.

The charges, filed in May, accuse Otse of violating cybercrime laws by posting content deemed “grossly offensive, pornographic or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.” Additionally, Otse is alleged to have made inappropriate accusations against Nollywood actresses Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh. Specifically, the charges claim Otse accused Ojo of misconduct with her daughter and identified Dikeh as the person behind the popular gossip blog Gistlover.

Otse maintains his innocence and pleaded not guilty to all charges. While prosecutors requested his detention, Otse’s legal team argued for his continued custody at the National Cybercrime Center, which the court approved.

This is not Otse’s first brush with authorities. He was previously arrested in March on similar complaints but released a week later. The current charges reportedly stem from complaints filed by Ojo, Dikeh, and musician Samklef.

Details of Otse’s bail conditions remain undisclosed.
