But things get more sinister when the high school principal receives a severed finger in the mail. Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise, is acting strange, and she’s unsure if it’s old-age forgetfulness and bluntness or something more sinister. Madeline is facing the biggest challenge of her life, Jane has reached a fork in her marriage, and Bonnie has realized there’s only so much solace in yoga. Meanwhile, Renata is living her best life.

Will Big Little Lies Season 3 follow Big Little Truths?
Yes, Season 3 of Big Little Lies is an adaptation of Big Little Truths. So, if you’re dying to know what mystery the women of Monterey are facing this time, you can dive into the book before the show actually airs. Big Little Truths will serve as the source material, but it’s doubtful the show will follow the book beat for beat. For example, the Big Little Lies book takes place in Australia, while the show is set in California.
What will Big Little Lies Season 3 be about?
Big Little Lies Season 3 will center on the same group of women and their children, but the issues they’re facing have changed as time has passed. When raising teenagers, it’s not as easy to keep secrets.
In an interview with USA Today, Moriarty revealed that the novel (and its coming adaptation) will follow the same interview structure as book one, but this time, it’s the children who are being interviewed after Madeline’s 50th birthday party sets off a chain of events. HBO Max hasn’t announced an official premiere date for Big Little Lies Season 3, but fans speculate it won’t release until late 2027 or 2028. It may be a painful wait to watch the show on your screen, but at least with the release of Big Little Truths, you can return to Moriarty’s world ahead of the show.
Will the original Big Little Lies cast return for Season 3?
We’re still awaiting an official casting announcement, but with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman signed on as executive producers, it’s safe to assume they will reprise their roles. Based on Big Little Truths, it’s likely the other members of the Monterey Five, including Renata (Laura Dern), Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz), and Jane (Shailene Woodley), will also return.
And expect to see more Laura Dern in Season 3, as Moriarty said she was influenced by her portrayal of Renata to give her an even larger role in the sequel. With the book description calling out Mary Louise, Celeste’s mother-in-law, we can hope Meryl Streep will also return to the cast.

Ed and Madeline renew their vows, forgiving Madeline for cheating on him.
