Italian Restaurant Encourages Conversation with Free Wine for Ditched Phones
An Italian restaurant owner is taking a unique approach to create a more social dining experience. Angelo Lella, owner of Al Condominio in Verona, offers customers a free bottle of wine in exchange for leaving their phones in a locked box during their meal.
Lella’s aim is to encourage conversation and connection among diners. “It’s wonderful to see people talking instead of being glued to their phones,” he says.
The concept is simple: guests place their phones in a secure box and receive a complimentary bottle of wine. This “tech detox” also includes an incentive for feedback – the author of the most positive review receives a free return meal.
The experiment appears to be a success. Lella reports that 90% of customers participate, opting for conversation and a free bottle of wine over their phones. This could be the beginning of a new trend in dining, where putting down technology creates a more enjoyable and social experience.
